Firstly, the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] taruma16 gave me a link to some splendid Lucius icons. Thank you so much, luv. They're gorgeous! I thought I would pass the love on (There are some lovely Snape icons there too and some very spiffy HP fanart ones.

Secondly, I was LJ hopping earlier (anyone else do that? - it's no wonder I never get anything done), and I came across a very funny essay of Britishisms versus Americanisms for the budding fanfic writer. Very useful and mostly for the beginner, but still lots of fun; the examples are brilliant. Do come in

I used to beta for a girl that needed that essay. Not that I get the British stuff right all the time but she wrote Snape fic and I swear he always ended up sounding like an American teen-ager. The number of times I deleted things like Snape saying, "That's so awesome" or "That's cool" is mind boggling. I tried sending her British slang links...or suggesting that it's probably best that Snape not use slang at all but...eventually she found a new beta, which was good because I was ready to ask her if she'd actually read the books.

Eeep, the whole point in writing fanfiction is the emulate the actual characters. They've got to sound like them, and that includes getting their nationalities right.

Exactly. You may get a little more leeway with the kids but Snape? As I said, probably best to avoid slang all together since he tends to be formal but...

And yes, getting nationalities right is why I posted the other day about food. That or I just don't mention any food that's not in the book.

Oh, I wasn't around to see that post. Damn, I could have helped out. Any Brit-type questions, I'm happy to help with.

Yeah, Snape isn't the slang-type ...

[livejournal.com profile] rileysaplank answered for me.

But yeah, after an hour of trying to find the information using google I realized that you, Andy, and a several others on my flist are British and could give me an answer much faster. :)

They were great! Thanks so much! And it just so happens that I deleted a whole load of icons just the other day so I've got plenty of room. Yay!!

MWAH!

Brill essay! Pants? Nooo! It's also useful for Brits writing American characters if you look at it the other way around. *g* BWAH!
