Gay Comic Book Pimp!
Jun. 7th, 2007 06:30 pmThis week I borrowed Young Avengers from my friend M from work. He's my comic swapsie buddy: my DC stuff for his Marvel - yeah, baby. Anyway, he's gay and is fully aware of my fondness for All Things Gay, even if he does think I'm a bit of a perve - well, he's probably right. ~g~
So, knowing that I would like nothing more than Tim Drake and Dick Grayson served up naked on a platter, he found and then flung my way...Gay!Teen!Super Heroes! Whooohooooo!!
Seriously, I've read two out the three published-so-far volumes and it's brilliant. The art is good and the boys - and girls - are pretty, the dialog is unique and fun, and the plots are riveting. Two of the group, Wiccan (Billy) and Hulkling (Teddy) are in a relationship together and it's just the sweetest thing ever. They worry about each other and there is H/C and genuine emotions, and non-graphic touching! (Yay!)
The wonderful thing is, the whole gay thing isn't in your face; Marvel haven't made an issue out of it. It's just a group of young heroes getting started, having problems and finding their feet and, oh, two of them happen to be gay. Honestly, it's like something out of fan fiction.
I'm definitely a DC girl. Marvel just doesn't do it for me, I don't know why. But this comic book? It changes everything.
Seriously, if you're at all interested, go buy these books (There's only two plus a Civil War tie-in). It's an excellent title and I know you're all for encouraging published works, with gay characters, which are not unnecessarily only aimed at the gay market. Mainstream, baby. I want it to happen. Go, seek, buy! Amazon.co.uk and .com have it nice and cheap, but I'm sure you can get it in loads of places.
I believe it's on hiatus now, and I've heard a rumour that when it comes back it will be bi-monthly. Not good enough! I want it monthly and I want it NOW!

Date: 2007-06-07 09:20 pm (UTC)I like Marvel though. Not all the titles, just all the Spider-man ones, and well, Venom, Avengers, West Coast Avengers, Daredevil, Knights of Pendragon, Wolverine, Capt. America (sob)...Excalibur was my favorite of the X books, but that could be because Lockheed the Dragon is my hero! LOL
~enables you with
Excelsior!
