Title: The Table

Pairing: Superman/Nightwing

Rating: An R at the very most.

Summary: Dick discovers there is something on the table.

It wasn’t that he was scared. He was just cautious.

Dick - Nightwing - looked down at the people below. A rooftop perch was the perfect place to observe the goings on around him.

The people, the drama and the everyday lives of the ordinary.

The slamming of doors and the skippity skip of children running and playing and itching to be taller, to be grown and in charge. Office workers in bland suits with black leather briefcases that probably only contained the morning’s paper and a calculator that had never been used.

The old, the young, the ‘kidding themselves’; they walked, talked, shopped and argued. They whispered secrets on cell phones, kicked trash along sidewalks and popped gum with painted mouths.

Just people.

It was mundane, it was boring – he loathed it and craved it all at once.

There were ten blondes to every brunette down there, Dick noticed, and he wondered if that had something to do with the summer. There were always more blondes when the sun was shining. Or perhaps it was that he only noticed them now that he scanned the pavement for a Brunette.

He knew that he wouldn’t see her, though. A messy break-up and a job-of-a-lifetime meant that Metropolis was no longer home to Lois Lane. That had been a year ago, but whenever Nightwing swung into town he still kept his eyes peeled for her. He couldn’t help it. It was a reflex thing, a tic, a habit that probably annoyed the hell out of Clark.

He just couldn’t believe it was real. He refused to acknowledge that the man he’d wanted ever since he was a boy was now his and his alone. Surely it was a practical joke and at some point soon The Joker and his crazy girlfriend would pop out of a giant cake that he hadn’t known he’d been standing next to. At least a refreshing spurt of acid in the face would bring him to his senses.

What was he thinking, exactly? Was he crazy? Certifiable? In need of a padded cell and a toy monkey to hug?

Dick didn’t even want to think about the string of relationships he’d left behind him and he was well aware that hurt was a two-way street somewhere in the town of Graysonville.

Clark was his friend and had been since Dick could remember. Even as a child he’d doted on him, slowly making the transition from wow, Superman!!!! to a friend that he trusted just as much as Bruce and nearly as much as his own parents. He steered clear of thinking about the boyhood phase that brought Dick full circle back to wow, Superman!!!! with an added Omygod, I wanna touch. I wanna feel. I wanna get taller so I can get on my knees and…

Red boots landed softly beside him and Dick smiled brightly despite the urge to play it cool as a bat. “Hey,” he said.

“Hey to you, too.”

Dick took the offered hand and rose from his squatting position. Clark kissed him, quick and warm and leaving a tingly feeling on his lips that he knew would buzz him all day long.

“This is a surprise,” Clark said. From his expression it wasn’t a nasty one. Dick observed that. He was careful to observe all such things. “What do I owe?”

“Migration,” Dick answered. “Bludhaven seems to have lost one of its most wanted.”

“And I’ve gained one, have I?” Clark’s cape billowed behind him in a rush of wind that was probably non-existent on the ground. His hands automatically went to his hips and Dick had trouble hiding his smirklaughsporfle. “What’s so funny?” Clark asked.

“You,” Dick said. “Poster Boy. Are you coming?” He turned and sprang, pumped, leaped to the edge of the building and over the side.

Clark watched him flip into the air, a perfect body somersaulting, turning, twisting and landing on the next rooftop with the ease of a Metahuman and the grace of just Nightwing.

“Hey!” Dick called. “Did someone put Kryptonite in your boots again? Come on. We’ve got a bad guy to catch.”

A grin spread over Clark’s broad face. Dick was a natural. He was born to move like he did. Born to spend his life flipping through the air and always landing on his feet. And he always did, no matter what that life threw at him.

Clark landed before he knew he’d taken off, right in front of Dick and close enough to brush his toes. “Who are we looking for?”

“Uh – big guy, dead ringer for Frank Sinatra, except for the beard. And the fact that he only has one real arm. Oh, and he’s packing big time. Cop killers.”

For just a moment, one single moment in time, the façade dropped and Clark saw something hidden behind the mask. “You lost a friend,” he said.

Dick shook his head. “A colleague.” He turned to tackle the next jump, but a powerful hand on his arm made him turn and aim that piercing gaze right back at Clark. “What? Are you gonna help me or what?”

“Since when do you need me?”

It was an honest question that didn’t surprise Dick at all. He hesitated before he spoke. “I’m just…kinda tired. Could do with a swift resolution and a major nap.”

“Fair enough. You can sleep at my place, if you want.”

Dick smiled. He knew that Clark worried about him as much as the others did but, unlike them, Clark didn’t make him feel pressured or foolish or just wrong. He trusted Dick to ask for help if and when he needed it. “Sure. You’ll have to fly me home in the morning, though.”

“Early shift?” Clark asked.

“Like you wouldn’t believe.”

Clark nodded and clapped his hands together. “Right, then. Let’s go catch some bad guys and get you into bed. Um, or something.”

Dick laughed and decided it was a good thing that Clark embarrassed more easily than he did. It was fun to watch his face turn redder than his cape. “I got a sighting over at Metropolis City Bank.” He was turned and pulled by one arm and suddenly they were halfway there. “Do you think I should quit?” he asked out of the blue, although it didn’t seem to surprise Clark.

“I think you should do whatever you need to.”

“And if I screw up?” Dick tried his best to look like The Man Who Would Never Screw Up, but that was difficult while he was busy looking like some sort of idiot with his cheeks flapping in the wind and both legs and his one free arm doing some sort of swimming stroke through the air.

“I don’t think you will.”

Dick landed on the roof of the bank as gently as though he’d just stepped off an express elevator. He headed for the fire escape as he spoke. “But if I do?”

“Then you do. I’ll be here for you.”

Dick jumped down the stairwell and ran towards the sound of a scream. “Yeah?” he said over his shoulder.

“You sound surprised. Nothing you could do would ever make me stop loving you, you know?”

That stopped Dick in his tracks. Well, the closed door actually stopped him, but he felt sure that he would have stopped anyway. “You…? Do you…?”

“Ah. Had I not mentioned that?”

The door was apparently still closed. Why weren’t all doors like the ones in Star Trek? An automatic shooooooop sure would be handy right about now because Dick had suddenly forgotten how one uses a door handle. “Uh, no. I don’t think you put it on the table. You put me on the table, but that’s a whole ‘nother matter. So, um, what about…?”

Clark reached around, opened the door and gestured for Dick to go first. Such a gentlemen. “She’ll always have a place. But not in my future. At least not like that.”

Dick nodded and trotted down the corridor, stopping just before a bend to the left. He was just being cautious. He wasn’t scared. “It’s just that you two were so…you know?”

“So were you and Barbara.”

There was a fierce look on Dick’s face as he turned. It took a second or two to melt. “I guess sometimes things don’t work out, even when you’re so sure that one day they will.” A shot fired in the not-so-distant distance. “Oh, crap. There’s a lot to be said for timing.”

“We can talk about this when we get back to my place,” Clark said and, hey, when was it he’d started needing to jog to keep up with Dick?

“What’s to talk about?” Dick asked. “You love me. I’m adored. That’s definitely something I can live with.” He turned again, his hand pressing against a swing door and feeling sure he would be able to open this one with minimal trouble.

“Dick…?” Clark saw the vulnerability. He’d seen the mask a long time ago and he knew the times that Dick hid behind it. He also knew what that meant. “Maybe you wanna put me down on the table later?”

Another one of those blinding Dick Grayson smiles and the swing door was doing what it did best. “You can bet on it.”

This is so wonderful, I loved it so much. The narration was great and the interaction was awesome!

I'm going to be utterly shameless and beg for a sequel. This was just too good and there HAS to be more!

Thank you so much.

Oh, I loved this. It was adorable, it was Dick and Clark perfectly in character. It made me want to go write some more Clark and Dick because they are so right together.

I especially liked this: "I wanna get taller so I can get on my knees and. . "

Comics should show *that*, is all I'm saying. Mmm.

Thank you!

Oh, and I forgot to mention: I feel like dick. I mean Dick.

*coughs*

He refused to acknowledge that the man he’d wanted ever since he was a boy was now his and his alone. Surely it was a practical joke

I still feel like that with my fiancee. You write people very well.

*Tilts her head* Aaaawww...
Dick is a cutie...
And I love that Superman is a bit insecure..
and that he just throws "I Love You" in the conversation...
And that they do it on the table..
*Smooch*
