I had the day off today, time in lieu for working the Satuday just gone. I had big plans. Then I developed a killer headache and spent the day slumped in front of the TV. But it's not all bad. It gave me the chance to finish watching Firefly and then tuck into Serenity. I'd borrowed both from the new guy at work and boy am I grateful!

Cowboys in space!! OMG!!

Firefly was wickedly, beautifully, totally, Jossily wonderful. I loved and adored every second of it. It's very different from Buffy or Angel and yet it screamed of the work of Joss. The mix of a historical western and futuristic sci-fi worked extremely well. The chatacters were all very different and also very distinguishable from each other. I think that's a pitfall that many a TV shows fall into - too many characters that are exactly the same. But the crew of Serenity (The ship, for those that haven't seen either the series or film) are all such individuals. They all had qualities that made them stand out and they all had qualities that made them very likeable.

Mal is my fav. He's so very different to the character, Caleb, that he played in S7 Buffy. That guy I hated. Euw ~shudder~ But Mal? I'm so very, very, very smitten.

The Engineer, Kaylee, was another firm fav. She was very sweet, an odd mix of tom boy and girlie wannabe.

And Jayne? He was so cute! Such a big, growly bear. And so funny! That hat! With the ears!

Simon, I tried to work out all the way through if I thought he was attractive or not. It was a real stumper until the ep with him just in his PJ bottoms. Wow, nice bod.

Inara, soooo beautiful.

Zoe, much better than I expected. Have some serious respect for her.

Wash, oh! Really liked him. Meep.

River, scary girl. I thought at first that her character was very Dru-ish, but by the end I realised I was wrong. Her character was very David Lynch-ish. When Dru talks crazy it's almost translateable. River's ramblings are often totally weird and unconnected (seemingly) Very Twin Peaks.

I'm so very dissapointed that Firefly got cancelled. Some of the plot was a little confusing and there were a few other faults, such as very dark lighting too much of the time and the character's voices were a little too fast and mumbly at times, but I feel this would have been improved as the series went on. I'm very sad that it never got the chance.

Now, the movie. I should not have watched it directly after watching the last five eps of Firefly back to back. I'd gotten used to a nice slow pace of plot laying and mystery and wonder and speculation, then BAM!!! I watched the movie and everything was wrapped up in under two hours. Don't get me wrong, it was a great film and I really enjoyed it, and i also appreciate that this was the only way that Joss could wrap up the tale, but it just made me long for more of the series. It made me pine for what Firefly could have grown into if the events of the film had been played over two, three or even more seasons. It would have been sensational. Also, I felt that there was a lot more to Jayne's character than was shown in the film. He was mostly forgotten. That was a real shame.

Damn the Network or whoever was responsable for this. Were they trying to drive Joss away? Well, I so don't blame him for not wanting to return to television unless he had almost total control. This must have been a big chunk of his dreams shot down in flames. At least he got to make the movie. He makes a good movie. Anyone else totally fucking excitied about Wonder Woman? Who's gonna go see it with me when it comes out? ~pokes Kitty~ Anyone else?

So, to conclude, I ADORED Firefly and I'm so glad that I've seen it. I really enjoyed Serenity, but I wish we'd had many seasons of the series instead. I guess films tend to pass me by these days. I used to be a big film fan, but now I have a greater appreciation for a television series. There's nothing like immersing yourself in a great big plot that will often take years to play out. The potential to do that is what grabs me mow.

Also, you sooooo know I'm gonna write a Xander/Mal Firefly crossover. ~g~

Yay! It's always fun to discover Firefly!

Simon is defintely my fav though ;^)

I agree that the movie didn't have enough Jayne! Or at least not enough of his great comments.

Definitely the network's (FOX's) fault.

First:

1) They didn't advertise it.
2) They didn't air the pilot until the very end when they'd already cancelled it so no one knew the original plot.
3) They aired a lot of the rest of the episodes out of order.
4) They kept changing the night on which it aired without telling anyone.

Is is any wonder there weren't enough people watching it to keep it on the air back then? First no one knew about it, those that did couldn't find it because it kept moving, and those that happened across it had no clue what was happening.

I hate FOX.

I hate fox, too. I'm not even gonna capitalise it, cos I hate it so much. Grrr.

Wow, they really fucked it up, didn't they? I mean, showing it out of order? Is that usual for US TV shows? How...stupid!

Simon was def cute and Jayne's comments! Gods, he was so funny. He was such a character!

No...it's not how they normally do shows at all.

Fox is just evil.

And they seem to have this weird vandetta for anything (co-)written by Tim Minear (he also worked on Angel - not a fox show - with Joss, but FOX has driven into the ground Firefly, The Inside, and Wonderfalls, all Tim Minear shows...you think he'd learn!)

Serenity and Firefly are brilliant. I can't pick a favourite character because I love them all. One minute it's Mal, then I think oh I like Simon but then again I adore Jayne and Wash is very sweet as well. It's too difficult to choose I'll just have them all!!

I'm disappointed too that there will be no more Firefly.

Did you watch the extras on Serenity? You should the outtakes are very funny.

Looking forward to the fics!

Oh, yeah, they were all brilliant. Every character had something to offer, something I wanted to watch and follow. There was a real chemistry between them all.

I haven't watched any extras yet. I def will though, especially if there are funny outtakes. I love bloopers!! I could watch them all day :o)

Oh and you must watch the Easter Egg.

On the main menu highlight 'play' then press left. The shape in the right hand side of the screen will become highlighted in red. Hit enter.

It's Joss talking about the Fruity Oaty Bar advert and then the advert itself. I warn you now the little tune is going to be stuck in your head for days. Enjoy!

It made me pine for what Firefly could have grown into if the events of the film had been played over two, three or even more seasons.

I felt exactly the same way after I saw Serenity. It's a confusing feeling to have a great love for a film only to also mourn what could have been. It was crushing. Seriously. *sob*

Also, you sooooo know I'm gonna write a Xander/Mal Firefly crossover. ~g~ *squee* Have you seen the Stargate Atlantis/Firefly crossovers? Rodney McKay/River can be so adorable, especially when he understands her brilliance. <33333 crossovers

Exactly! ~sobs too~ It's so upsetting. The network has a lot to answer to.

No, I've not delved into the world of SGA yet. I'm still catching up with the series. I do like Rodney, though. He's so sweet!

Yeah - what you said!

I am madly in love with ALL of the Firefly characters. Yes, each and every one! Joss? Is beyond genius with characterization.

I am unable to express accurately my anger and dismay for the sad fate of this brilliant show.

Fox network is full of giant pooty-heads. :/

Oh, yes, beyond genius!!! Firefly was such a wonderful mix of genre and characterisation. Given time he would have sculpted that series into something could have been even bigger than Buffy.

I SO hope you write that crossover fic.

I'm a Jayne fan, through and through. There is just so much to him. He can be totally idiotic at times, then suddenly have a moment of perfect genius. He's hot and adorable and did I mention hot? And there is just SO much to him lurking behind that "i'm the tough merc, all i care about is Vera, killin', and fuckin'." I even loved him in the epsidoe Ariel, despite his attempt of betrayal. He and Simon are so doing it.

I agree with that completely. I believe that if the series had continued we would have seen more of the tough side of him, but also subtle glimpses of the man beneath. He would have come through in the end. It's such a pity we won't get to see that played out how it should have been.

I even loved him in the epsidoe Ariel, despite his attempt of betrayal.

Me too!! He was...a product of his environment! It wasn't his fault! He was led astray! Oh, well, maybe he was just a bastard that had never had a family before. He's not used to how that feels.

He and Simon are so doing it.

Ohmygod, they so are! Blatantly. Doesn't Jayne even refer to Simon as being pretty at some point? I'm sure I squeed at something like that.

I'm definitely gonna write that fic. I have some ideas already. I'll see where the muse takes me and see if I can get something down on paper/Microsoft Word ;o)

I'm soo agreeing with you on everything you said :) I had a major dislike of Nathan Fillion, because of Caleb. But Firefly did really change that.

I was kinda disappointed by the movie at first. But after watching it for the second and third time I liked a lot more. I figured it's because I love those characters so much and I want them to be happy and together, damnit! *g*

And any Firefly fic and/or crossovers will be greatly appreciated! :D

Yeah, I hated him with a passion. But his character is so different in Firefly. You'd never think it!

After thinking about the film for a day, I've come to the conclusion that the death was unnessassary. It was almost like Joss thought he had to kill some so BAM he did it. I dunno if this person was marked for eventual death in the series, but I just feel that in the film - it was a waste. :o(

I'll see what i can do about the fic ;o)
