Pairing: Spike/Xander
Rating: Will eventually be NC-17
Warnings: Season 1 so will eventually contain underage Xander. Later parts may contain violence. You have been warned!
Summary: Teenage life on the Hellmouth
With this fic I’m leaning towards more ‘Tradional’ Spander. Boy meets big bad vampire and the two fall in love. Angst, H/C, romance and life on a Hellmouth.
It’s set season one, so be warned that this will feature an underage Xander in a consenting sexual relationship. And it WILL be graphic. So if that squicks I’d move on now.
I also intend to deal with the issue of Xander’s parents. I’ll totally admit that I have a fondness for fics where Xander is beaten by his evil father and ignored by his mother (Enter Spike for H/C), but I’d like to show something a little different here. I’m going along with implied/obvious canon that Xander’s parents are heavy drinkers/alcoholics/drunks, BUT I also want to explore another side of that. Life isn’t black and white – neither is alcoholism.
Aside from the parents and Spike themes, this fic primarily deals with Xander’s teenage issues. This may include: Bullying, school, underage drinking, smoking, sexuality, a future career and a whole pile of insecurities. This isn’t a negative fic, it’s how Xander faces, deals and overcomes the problems and obstacles in his life.
This fic won’t be following canon; I intend to twist it to fit my own needs. Nothing is set in stone and some of what I will write will depend on what people want to see. So feedback is very important. And I’m not just saying that to get more feedback. :oD

Chapter 1
“Totally flunked it.”
“Buffy,” Willow protested, “it wasn’t that bad.”
“It was a test. It was bad by default,” Buffy explained. “If it hadn’t been? Then it would have been a sure sign of the Hellmouth exploding open. We don’t want that, Wills. None of us want that.”
They stopped at the corner and Willow took her books from Buffy before she headed into her home. “It *wasn’t* that bad,” she said, fixing Buffy with a serious look. “You just…should have studied. And I know I sound mean and I don’t mean to be because I’m not mean, but - but…if you studied, then you wouldn’t flunk.”
Buffy raised an eyebrow.
“Come on, Buffy,” Willow continued. “This is your future.”
Buffy gazed off into the distance. And what future would that be? she thought. A future filled with nightmares and demons, vampires and musty books. How thrilling. And besides, it was kinda hard for the teenage brain to envisage the future far beyond ‘Is Saturday here yet?’
“Yeah, you’re right, Wills.” How could she say any different when Willow was looking at her with those big, sad eyes? “How about a study sesh tomorrow night? You can tell me everything you know. About Chem. Actually, forget that – it would still take a lifetime.”
Willow smiled kindly. “We’ll go over everything that the test covered.”
“Thanks. I’ll look forward to it.” Hey, who knew, there could very well be an apocalypse just waiting to happen before tomorrow night. Or her house could catch fire? Freak storm? Surprise Watcher/Slayer training? Anything that would lead to a Chem class study session not taking place, but would still keep Willow happy that she’d at least been prepared to try.
And where the hell was Xander? He should be here as head slacker to take the heat and deflect all nagging and disappointed looks from the path of the Slayer and junior slacker.
“See you tomorrow, then, Buffy. We could go back to my place after school. We don’t have to stay in the Library. We could get snacks. We could get Xander-snacks!” Willow suggested with a big grin.
Buffy pictured a mountain of chocolatey, cheesy and nutty Xander-snacks and laughed. “Only if we can get a Xander to go along with them.”
“Totally. Xander-snacks aren’t the same without a Xander to bring them along, crunch them loudly, drop the crumbs all over my bed and leave chocolate-prints over all my books.”
“Just don’t ever let him near your mom’s couch with a slushy,” Buffy said.
“Hey, do you think he’s okay?” Willow asked. “He must be really sick to miss three whole days of school.”
“I’m sure he’s fine,” Buffy said, trying to hide her grin. “I bet he’ll be back to school tomorrow, right as rain.” Oh, yeah, she was certain of that now that the chemistry test, math test, science test and geography test were firmly in the past.
“But he’s missed so much. I don’t want him to fall behind again.”
Probably a little late for that, Buffy thought. “I’m sure he won’t. Don’t worry, Will. Hey, maybe you could tutor him again for a while?” Buffy winced slightly as she said it. Xander would not be thanking her for that little piece of advice.
“Maybe. It didn’t go so well last time,” Willow remembered.
“That would be due to the Hyena spirit that took over his mind, body and sex drive. I don’t think he was in a very,” Buffy searched for the correct word, “tutory place back then. But he’s possession free right now! Grab him while you can!”
Willow turned red as a flash of exactly how she’d like to grab Xander entered her brain. “Um, yeah, definitely. I’ll…yeah. Okay, I have to go. See you tomorrow and don’t forget about the study session.” Willow hurried away, almost certain that Buffy could see the dirty thoughts still swirling around her head.
Buffy opened her mouth to say goodbye, but thought better of it as Willow sped away towards her house. Yeah, she knew exactly how Willow felt about Xander. She had the definite hots for him. She probably even loved him. But Xander didn’t love her back, at least not in *that* way.
Buffy turned and walked in the direction of the mansion. It had to hurt. Poor Willow. Buffy couldn’t even imagine what she was feeling. All she knew was that if Angel couldn’t love her the way that she loved him? She’d have left town a long time ago. Or made him leave. It didn’t bear thinking about.
But it wasn’t Xander’s fault. He couldn’t help it if he couldn’t love Willow the way she needed to be loved.
Yeah, she was lucky, really lucky. She had her mom, her friends, Angel. Everything was as perfect as it could ever be.
Buffy sighed and picked up her pace towards home. He mom was cooking lasagne tonight. See? Perfect.

The dash from the battered DeSoto to the tunnel was a short but speedy one. The sun was floating low in the sky with absolutely no regard for the creatures that were begging for it to sink faster beneath the horizon and let the moon fill its parking space.
He shrugged off the smouldering blanket and patted down his arm before he could become engulfed by the simmering flame. Fire bad; blood good. And blood was just what he needed right now. Driving was hungry work and he’d been driving since sunrise, speeding along desert roads and hustling through tiny hick towns. His destination? Sunnydale. His purpose? To find what he’d lost.
He looked around his new digs and nodded to himself. Not bad at all. Underground, quiet, dark, secluded – it was a vampire’s dream. Sort of. He wasn’t sure what the tunnel was used for but it would keep him safe from the resident Slayer. That was his only concern right now, at least until he found…
An almost inaudible growl and suddenly he was pounding his fist into the wall.
It hurt. It really hurt. Whoever said that vampires couldn’t feel were total berks. A broken heart felt the same whether it was beating or not.
The scent of his own blood flowed through the tunnel and suddenly reminded him that he was hungry. He pulled back his fist from the wall and hit it one more time for good measure. Then he stalked off to explore his very own underground ‘cavern.’ The sun would be setting in exactly fifty minutes. He would be feeding in fifty five.

Xander reached down off the side of the bed and snagged another comic book from the floor. It sure had been a fun few days. Skipping school had been one of his better plans.
His mom had been fairly easy to convince. A few graphic descriptions of chronic stomach cramps and the resulting bathroom trips was all it had taken. That and the big puppy eyes whenever she came into his room to feel his fevered forehead or to offer bread and soup.
His dad had been a total pushover. After a brief, concerned pause to ask if Xander had gotten the clap from somewhere, his father had been more than happy to accept Xander’s sickly status. It was either that or put up with Xander’s mother rattling on about how sick their son was. Not that Tony Harris wasn’t concerned about his son, but the last thing he needed was Jessica going on and *on* about it.
And now, miraculously, Xander was all better. Tomorrow was Friday and all tests were over. It was definitely time to get back to business.
School wasn’t really one of Xander’s favourite places in the world but, on a normal day, it wasn’t so bad. He would drift from class to class, daydreaming instead of listening and doodling instead of essay writing. He was just going through the motions. School just wasn’t for him.
He didn’t want to be dumb, and he was pretty sure that he wasn’t, but he was also sure that he didn’t have the smarts to get the really good grades. So what was the point in trying? What was the point in putting all that effort into achieving something, only to fail miserably?
There was only one class that he did enjoy and that was Art class. He had a whale of a time sploshing paint onto a canvas and moulding clay into something unrecognisable but probably slightly rude. It was at this time that his mind focused on what was actually in front of him and not on his fantasy world, where he was a rock star and a millionaire and the greatest and only male Slayer that the world has ever known.
And somewhere along the line, amongst the finger painting and weird papier mache masks, he’d started to get A’s.
“Xander!” A muffled voice called from downstairs.
“WHAT?!” Annoyed, Xander put down the comic. Geez, Batman was about to get his ass well and truly kicked. This was not a time to be interrupted!
The muffled voice requested he go out for milk and eggs now that he was feeling better.
Xander bit back his annoyance. There was no point in arguing about it. His dad was home now and arguing with his mom would result in either a clipped ear or no TV for a week. And besides, his mom had been really good to him these last few days, fetching food and orange juice, buying him a ton of comics and a new video to watch.
Xander carefully closed his comic and placed it back on the floor. Hey, maybe he’d be allowed to keep the change. He shoved his feet into his favourite and most comfortable sneakers and pulled on a sweater over his T-shirt. “COMING!”
