I think lit_gal points out in her mini Buffyverse intro that why spander works is the capacity for love and loyalty in both of these characters. Joss ruined a lot of my love of the scoobies in later seasons, so I always wanted some happiness. I think Spike and Xander are the most deserving of it and it seems logical they find it with each other.
