Oh, good. I was hoping that would be the answer. That's how they look in my head...I, of course mean, in my mind. I'd look pretty silly with both their cocks stuck in the top of my head. Hee! Cock horns!!
Oh god, I've gone to the silly place. This will do nothing for my dark, sexy smut scene. Damn it!!!
99.9% likelihood that Xander is circumsized. Almost all American parents circumsize their boys. I don't know about Spike--it seems reasonable to me that he would be uncut, but I don't know anything about Victorian circumcision practices.
Personally I say as you can't be told off for being non-canonical here you should go with whatever you need. I wanted Xander to be cut, but Spike not cut for the latest part of Catamite - they did a bit of docking - so voila, they were what I said.
The popularity of circumcision in America has dropped in later years, but it is most likely that Xander is cut and that William was uncut (yes, I've actually researched it - and it's not that I just like reading about cocks). :)
I can't remember the sources at the moment, but from what I remember:
Circumcision went out of favour in Britain during the 1700s, for a number of reasons - one of the main ones being that it was practiced by Jews and Muslims (don't you just love our tolerant history?). It didn't become popular again until the late Victorian era (and only really amongst the higher classes) when Queen Victoria decided that her family was descended from King David of Israel and said that all her sons should be circumcised. Personally I think that this probably means William was born too early for the procedure to be the norm.
Circumcision dropped in popularity again in Britain after the NHS was formed, due to a report that said infant circumcision led to about 16 children's deaths a year.
In America, however, circumcision carried on apace, with the main reason given being that it would stop the insanities of self-abuse. Yes, modern thinking there. In Xander's age range out of around 8,000,000 men, 7,000,000 have been circumcised (rough figures here) and I think the circumcision rate was 87%.
And yes, I do like to read about cocks. That's why I like m/m slash. One cock is great - two cocks are heaven!
Well, Spike is European and from an era when almost NO ONE was circumsized unless they were Jewish or there was a serious medical problem. Somehow I don't think he's Jewish, so almost definitely uncut.
As said above, most American boys were circumsized. This is still true, though with the protest groups this has lessoned in recent years. Still, Xander was in the group where they did it automatically at the hospital and parents practically had to ask NOT to have their baby cut to prevent it. Actually, it's not so much to do with masturbation worries, but rather the thought process at the time that cut was easier to clean and less likely to get infected (from not cleaning beneath the foreskin). Also less likely to spread STD's. For uncut guys with decent hygiene though, this really isn't a prob.
Okay so it's a definite then. Xander is cut and Spike is uncut. Got it. Yay!
Thanks again. That question had been bugging me for a while and I realised yesterday that i'd never specified it in a fic before. Well, times are a changing!!!
Just to add my two bits. It also depends on which type of hospital you are born in. My nephew was born in a Catholic hospital and they convinced my sister not to have him circumcised. However my son was born in a non-affiliated hospital and they literally counseled me on it because I felt that it was unnecessary (cleanliness can be taught!) and I see it as a form of maiming. However the doctors were convinced that I was not in my right mind and spoke to my husband who signed off on the paperwork immediately.
If you want him (Xander) cut that is fine. If you feel the need for him to be uncut you can always use the argument that his parents refused to shell out more money for the child. I can't remember what it cost but it was not cheap.
Maybe its just me because I live in a town with a high jewish population but American guys are almost always circumsized. I turn 30 this year and although I'm not a slut let's just say I'm friendly and I didn't see my first uncut love rod (on a grown up)until 3 years ago and honestly it scared me thought I was gonna be sick. How can you english girls stand to give head to those meaty monstrousity's?
LOL! Friendly? Is that what the kids are calling it these days?? :oD
I have to say, an uncut meatstick does scare me a little. I turn 30 this year too and I was with one guy for ten years. He was cut. I split with him just over a year ago and since then I've come across two uncut ones. The first time, I just wanted to point and ask, "What the hell am I supposed to do with that! Euw!"
I'm with the Bear. If you read me, you'll note that in my stuff, twentieth-century American boys are cut, while certain nineteenth-century Englishmen and eighteenth-century Irish we know are not. I was fairly certain of my facts there.
Things are changing now, and pretty quickly, I think; if season 1 of BtVS were airing righ now, things might be a little different for Xander (let me assure you right here and now that, being in my forties, I am NOT doing field research. I am only making this conjecture based 1)on the afformentioned growing feeling that it amounts to mutilation and 2) on the fact that today's high school boys are the sons of my male peers, who I have heard bemoan the decreased sensitivity that loss of the foreskin brings. Based on that, I'm guessing that a lot of them chose not to have their sons circumcised.
well, I don't know about American boys to be true I wondered myself. Do really 99% cut their boys? Why? Well, for Spike aka Will I would say no. He would be uncut. It is a tradition which comes from the jewish religion and Will was most likely in the Anglican Church of England. I certainly spelled it wrong, but as you are british you know what I mean.

Xander = most likely uncut as well, although for some reason, mothers randomly decide circumcision is okay without religious reasoning *rolls eyes*
